For quite a while I believed than a goalie is 80% of the team. I believed it so badly because I wanted to "prove" than goalie is more than just a crazy one who sit's in net and takes the shoot. I am tired of this meaning which comes all over again and again every time it starts discussion about goaltending and how freak you have to be to become a goalie and voluntary decide to sit in net and take the shoots one after another.
It has changed.
I think it's every and each goalie who "decides" this number and pro-cent of his value of team. It's the talent goalie has, the hard work it puts during every practice to save the every shoot in net just to do not fail in game and high-undiscovered passion and responsibility for goaltending (?). Goalie is the last one in who you can trust and who might take that fast-speed-close-aimed-shoot. When you give/say this trust/words to a goalie as a coach, as a player, as a dad or as a fan of the team, it means the whole World to a goalie or at least it should be like that (that's the way I feel). If goalie accepts it and understands this precious value he have, he is making a strong base for teammates/ players. With a strong background you can focus on feature game and build a strong "monster"/ a castle/ a tower/ a victory based on first detail- a goalie. For a goalie it's easily to freak out to have so much responsibility on his shoulders, but the most important is to have a faith in players than they will help you by doing their best in given situation and players have to have faith in goalie, than he is there to take that shoot no matters what. It's like Yin and Yang. Without one you can't have other.
(Maybe, if teams may focus more on goalies on practices like they do right now, the wining might be easier and loosed goals wouldn't be so many ?
There are teams which puts a lot of focus on goalie training/ exercises- aren't they succeeded a lot lately?
If goalie have no serious ambitions to become better or take this huge responsibility to become as stable background for team, than team have to work double to succeed? )
Players all together is like a heavy, metallic boll. It doesn't matter in what kind of substance each of them are, all together they mixes together and make a strong unity. They play together, they passes smooth, they shoot, they score! Goalie is like a floor. The ground, the material which holds the team. If this base is made of paper, it's easy to break true (team scores but always falls back because they lose too many goals). If this base is made of wood or iron, the ground is safe and stable and is easily to be trusted in this background.
It's like Yin and Yang. Without one you can't have other. Yin are the players and Yang is the goalie(for example.) If you focus on one and you forget other, you higher the difference between them. Still you can succeed, but this unity is broken, sick I might say.
Water and Fire.
In my opinion the goalie should be like a calm water, with stillness and at the same time be explosive like the waves in ocean which can come like from nowhere and become calm again. Goalie should have this secret and ability to show the calm and aggressive way at the same time.
Players should be like lightning-ball. Fire! Full of passion to score and never light off! Fight and be a warrior no matters what!
Goalie have to be outstanding and a bit focused by itself in my opinion.
It's difference between a goalkeeper, a good goalkeeper and very good goalkeeper.
Probably, the mission for goalie in team is to earn that trust I am talking above and keep it.
It stays 50-50. It's the difference between making the score and save the shoots, both of them is worthy 50% each... just a goalie takes that responsibility alone and carry it by himself. Not anyone can become a good goalkeeper, but anyone can become a goalkeeper. To be a very good goalkeeper you have to love this position and have to be ready to have this responsibility to be able to carry it by yourself. Your 50 % of the game and 100% of your own performance.
